Uptrack and downtracks above Poperechnoe Lake, Altay

Do you see the other 3 skiers up mid-slope? I took this photo on descent from Krutoy Pass, which was the first above-timberline adventure of our March 1988 ski backpack in the mountains of Altay. Today I look at the tracks and can't help thinking how much easier it would have been to skin up and ski down with today's gear!

Don't forget the weight of the backpacks! I reckon that it impaired our manoeuvrability more than the clumsiness of "Beskid" skies...

Re: Packs weight vs. Silveretta's

Not an issue at this particular shot 'cuz we were going light there.

A few years back I actually installed the vintage Kharkov bindings (a knockoff of the 50s Silveretta adjustibles) and tried them. The lack of control was truly amazing! And we skied all that shit like the Ural hard slabs with them. No wonder it took a lot of booting and cramponing on what looks like a ski terrain - or at best kick turning like in this picture :)
