Overview

This is the easiest and shortest way to Morezón. It starts on La Plataforma (1.780 m) and reaches the summit passing through Prado de las Pozas and Navasomera, two beautiful meadows. Finally ascents the steep NW face. The route can be done snowshoeing or alpine touring, it's always descent when returning though the final section can't usually be skied because of the rocks.

Getting There

For approaching La Plataforma (1.780 m) go to Getting there here. On weekends and holidays with good weather there are many cars on La Plataforma so you'll have to park far (1 Km sometimes) from the road end.

Route Description

From La Plataforma (1.780 m) take the trail between a wooden built bar and a dustbins enclosure. It's as wide as a forest trail but it's rocky loose at the begining. It goes in parallel and to the right with Garganta de Prado Puerto leaving Cuerda del Facioso (1.987 m) to the left. The trail zig-zags having to ascend quite hard. In late autumn and winter try to avoid the ice its hardest section though it's better to put your crampons on. After 15 minutes the trail turns right leaving an old pluviometer and Prado (meadow) Puerto to the left. There are many paths there but always follow the main trail wich climbs to Prado de las Pozas and leaves a schrub (piornos) field to the left. Once passed Refugio de Reguero Llano placard and having ascended a little slope take a narrow path (not paved) to the left (1.900 approximately - 20 minutes). Another option would be asceding on the slope just after the pluviometer trying to reach the path that I have described before.

You are now on the huge Prado de las Pozas, traverse it to the SW wards heading to Cuerda del Refugio (2.129 m), wich must be left to the left. Ascend following some cairns on grass, you'll see Cuento Alto (2.271 m) and the little Garganta de las Pozas to the right. But always ascent on half the slope leaving Cuerda del Refugio to the left. Reach a rather big flat at approximately 2.000 m (50 minutes) and follow on the same direction (S-SW), heading to Cerro de la Cagarruta (2.299 m). The trail surround a piornos field on the left and then turns right to a rather wide gully (2.200 m approximately - 1 h 30 min) on the NW face of Cerro de la Cagarruta. But sometimes when the snow covers the ground the trail climbs high passing near Cerro de la Cagarruta summit but always on the NW flank. Once climbed the easy gully (35º) there is a short (5 m) descent to a beautiful stream basin called Navasomera, where there are some pools.

Ascend SW wards on a narrow creek and turn right just until a broad and very wide Col (2268 m - 1 h 45 min). Climb the NE face of Morezón W wards, heading to the Point 2.387, wich is a big rock that could be mixed up with the Morezón summit. The last is to the SW on the same ridge, walk on the easy and rocky comb to Morezón (2.389 m - 2h 15 min) top, where there is a white iron broken cross. It's also possible to reach it directly on a wide gully (45º) just to the right of the summit if seen from below.

The descent (1h 40 min) is on the same trail of ascent but could be done on other ways. Cuerda del Cuento and Majada Adrián to Laguna Grande are two posibilities that I hope to tell in the very near future. The times are in summer, they could significantly change with snow, more when it's soft.

Essential Gear

Out of summer get warm clothes with you. Crampons and ice axe (poles) are also advisable from late autumn to early spring. Compass and altimeter could be recommendable too. Always take a map. It's so easy to lose one's way when it's foggy and storms approaches so quick on Sierra de Gredos. In summer wear few clothes, cap and never forget some garments (jacket). Avila province is know for its cold temperatures.

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
