Winter Ptarmagan's Condo

Winter Ptarmagan's Condo

In winter plumage, White-tailed Ptarmagans have a behavioral habit of borrowing into the snow on cold winter days, seen here on the southeast side of Carbon Ridge, just north of Mt. Rainier NP. The insulation properties of the snow complete the Ptarmagan's cozy habitat. You can see these Ptarmagans sticking their heads out of their "condo units." Scanned from 35mm photo taken in December 1984.
