Approaching the Petit Griffon

January 29th, 2011 - A great winter climb of the Petit Griffon in the High Sierra. AlpineAffinity is chopping out a belay ledge in the snow crest at the top while Vitaliy M is nearing the steepest part of the couloir.

	Hasn't voted	Standard route, although the 5.9 corner looks like a fun summer climb. Thanks for the beta! Also, thanks to Alois for his beta too. We made it to the ledge on the West side just about 30' or so below the top - right where you traverse around to the South to climb up the easier side from between the two high points. The cold front was blasting the Petit pretty good then, so we decided to call it safe and bailed :-( 1 70m rope was good for rapping from that spot, but from the summit you'd need 2 ropes, 2 raps, or a little bit of down climbing to reach the notch. The first pitch was fun in crampons! Weather forced us to day climb it, but we still intend to go back for a multi-day romp in the area if the weather and snowpack allow it. Maybe February will be kinder to us.
