| The divide socked in as we rushed from the summit. We were pelted with corn-snow and rushed back below the ridge on the western slopes, through some snowfields, to avoid the lightning potential on top of the ridge. | ||

| My wife and I decided to drive up and see how the conditions looked. It turned out to be a great hike to the summit of Colorado Mines on awesome snow. The views were limited to almost nothing and we decided to forgo Flora until another day. Winds were high and cold. | ||

| I climbed Mt Flora first, then bagged Mines on the way back to the pass. The weather looked a little threatening, but all we got were a few scads of fluffy hail. I am still not sure I reached the true summit of Flora. I went as far as the summit where the trail descends towards Breckenridge Peak. This summit is shown as Mt Flora on the maps (unless I'm reading it wrong), but there is a point on the ridge to the northeast that definitely looks higher. I wanted to go over that way, just in case, but the weather didn't look very good. | ||

| December 4 2009: Today I climbed Colorado Mines Peak alone. I was hoping to climb Flora as well, but didn’t make it. It was “pleasantly chilly” below timberline and it wasn’t that cold when climbing, but above timberline, it was very windy. By the time I was above 12,000 feet the wind was screaming across the Continental Divide. I found out that my new winter pants aren’t as warm as my other ones and it was pretty chilly. I estimated the wind was at 30-50 mph on the upper slopes, but some gust could have been higher. I struggled to the summit, but once on the summit, I didn’t stay long. I recorded the temperature at -4F, which would put the windchill at -37F (-61F on the old windchill chart!). Unfortunately, I went to adjust my goggles and accidentally loosened my hat which the wind quickly stole and sent it flying towards Denver, Kansas or where ever. I long gave up the thought of climbing Flora so I took some photos from the summit of Colorado Mines Peak and headed back down. August 3 2003: With wife and 14.5 month old son. Son and wife stayed at Colorado Mines Peak while I quickly went up to Flora. | ||
