mpjonesRoad Update  Sucess!

The road was gated as expected. A mountain bike would be in order here. Even if, like me, you don't have massive, hill-pumping quads. Anyway, the road looks to be passable to any vehicle. I saw earthmoving equipment and lots of recent road work. There were no major washouts or potholes, and only a few muddy spots, nothing that would bog down a 2WD. I'd wager that the road will be open this year on schedule.

Discovered the gate closed at Coast Ridge Rd, and decided to make a go for it since it was early in the morning and I had plenty of supplies. Turned the 4 mile hike into 16, which unfortunately had me hitting the steepest elevation gain at noon. This was the only day of my entire week in CA that it didn't rain, and I was rewarded with decent views of the coastline and Pacific. I was THE only person on the trail to the peak, which in hindsight may not have been the safest decision...but I'm happy I forged ahead and didn't end up as some mountain lion's lunch. :)

The road was closed at Naciemento Road, but I went for it anyway. This added 12 miles roundtrip, and it ended up being a 4.5 hour ordeal truck-to-truck, with about 1.5 hours of that in a decent jog. Beautiful day and the views were spectacular. Not a soul in sight.

Twin and Cone Peaks on an overcast but delightful day. Few flies, no ticks. Good use trail between Cone Peak Trail and Twin Peak across the SW Face of Cone. Thanks to Robert Parks for the information, who I met at the end of the Cone Peak Rd the night before. Trip Report.

Pictures on this page made me determined to see snow and the ocean here in one view, the snow wasn't fresh but was just enough to satisfy.

Trail is easy and well-maintained. View from the top is superb. We scrambled up the rocks on the SW face; I was surprised to find several hundred feet of good rocks to climb below this peak.

I've bagged this peak too many times to count. An easy hike with well maintained trail from the Coast Ridge Road. The Peak is usually well above the coastal overcast for superb views.

Cone peak road was closed, so hiked the 5-ish miles to the trailhead, topped out mid-afternoon with outstanding views of the Big Sur coastline. Didn't want to come down!

Nice warm up hike for other trips in the area.

Via the standard route from Coast Ridge Road in a bit over an hour each way. Gorgeous, sunny day and spring flowers in over abundance.

Drove up Cone Peak Road 5.1 miles to the marked trailhead (next time I'll park at the first turnout at 4 miles and hike the road to the trail, as the road gets tougher to drive from there). Had a couple visitors from the East Coast, and the views did not disappoint. Clear day, almost no fog, incredible views!

Hiked all the way up Cone Peak Road (6 miles), then about 0.75mi into the Ventana Wilderness, then cut west up to North Ridge, scrambled it all the way to summit.

Generally rotten rock, but at least the brush at this elevation wasn't bad and there appeared to be a use trail in places. Kept it to class 2-3-ish bypassing some of towers. Descended via the summit trail. ~13 miles / 3000' for the day, which was clear but windy (a storm passed through yesterday).

In past years I've come up via Cone Peak road or Trail Spring numerous times. Always a fun way to top off a trip to the south Ventana !
