Did Bat the previous day and wanted to shorten our Sunday drive back to the Bay Area, so we decided to snag something as a warm-down on our way through/out of the park on Saturday. DVB hit the mark perfectly. An easy and unassuming hike with a tiny bit of scrambly bits at the end. Fun!

PS if I ever write a desert peak bagging book I'm calling it "Scrambly Bits and Slippery Shit" and putting a pic of this peak on the cover.

Winter 2013

Decided while at work last night to climb the Buttes before my shift today. Headed up with Eli this morning, and we both really enjoyed the Class 3 scrambling near the end. It gave this little hike a bigger feel! Well, off to work!

What a pleasant surprise. See the caution about parking in comments on standard route.

After Corkscrew, I had a couple more hours to spare, so I could not resist hitting DV Buttes.

The USGS benchmark is busted out, and only some broken cement remains. Bummer.

Climbed both buttes in the morning. It was a fun ridge traverse with great views. A few days later we met two artists who had painted the buttes as we were climbing them.

Scrambled up the east face of the East Butte (2720+) only to be chased from the summit by hoardes of flying red ants who seemed to be living only at the apex of the peak. A fun scramble - great Death Valley views.

I'd already done a hike in a nearby canyon this day, so I only got to the summit of the eastern butte due to fading light (a little too exposed to do "Red Top" alone in the dark). Nice views--it's Death Valley!

we decided to see how fast we could do the peak so we ran. lucky for me my shoe blew out (entire sole came off) as we approached the car. good training for fire season.

A nice section of scrambling on the higher butte. The views of Corkscrew were definitely worth the minimal effort.

Excellent Thanksgiving Day hike, but not a turkey in sight! Did this little number after Telescope the day before. Fun little adventure that was a little over an hour to the summit from the Devil's Gate parking lot. Outstanding views and clear blue skys. The sand dunes take on a sureal look from the summit. Also enjoyed waving at the cars passing on the road below as I hiked down the summit ridge. I'll do this little gem again.

We were driving through Death Valley by accident really after conditions on Shasta and Whitney prompted us to head straight for Zion, our eventual destination on this trip anyway. Turned out this was supposed to be the finest wildflower show Death Valley has put on in over 100 years. Some people just live right I guess. Tons of folks in the park, so we just sped on through, but laced on the trail shoes at Hells Gate and did this little number. The best part was the descent I took into a wash on the north side. Total private desert feeling as I circled back to the parking lot. Just a wonderful run. Gets a tad chilly towards dark. Had to drive all the way to St George. No where to camp or stay last minute, even in Vegas. Cheers.
