Feet of Clay
The start of the hike is through multi-colored clays created by the weathering of volcanic ash. If this area is even slightly wet, it is very slippery and treacherous (see Daniel 2: 31-33).

I used to have another, far prettier picture here to show the clays in context; but alas, I was given the picture by someone else, and eventually realized it was color-enhanced. Worse, people were voting on that picture because it was pretty, not because it conveyed useful information.
