Stu BrandelNot so Bright Angel  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 20, 1994

Stu Brandel

Breakfasted at the rim on last day of a trip and was talked into a same day rim to river and back trip via Bright Angel, prior to our midnight flight. We scampered down (those warning signs don't apply to us, we thought)and had a nice lunch at Pine Creek Beach on the river. The trudge back up was long, hard and heat strokey. We deserved every broiling inch of it.

I did the south to north hike during the first week of July. The scenery was awesome, but I spent most of my time cooling off in creeks. The rangers recommend this as a 4-day hike. I'd either crank it out in a day or pull a single overnight.

I was part of the "Hikers In Training" team. We trained for 4 months while raising money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. It was a very rewarding experience. We hiked the Hermit Trail to Dripping Springs and back. (South rim)

Down S. Kaibob to Phantom up N. Kaibob and back up Bright Angel. Left at 3:00 A.M. and back at 1:00 A.M. Fellow psychos were Colin Carnahan, Craig Oliver, Ryan Carter and Eric Smith. Perfect weather and truly a once in a liftime experience.

I didn't hike the rim trails, but I spent 28 days rafting through the canyon. It was an unforgettable month and a trip of a lifetime. In 2005 I spent three days hiking above and below Havasupai Falls.

Spent 3 days exploring the canyon. February is a great time to go, no crowds. Can get a little chilly but the light sprinkling of snow on the rocks in the early morning is breathtaking.

This is new ground for me. You're right! February is the
best time to go. I worked on the South Rim for 9-1/2 months.

Our third time below the rim, but our first R2R. Hiked down the North Kaibab, stayed at Phantom Ranch 2 nights, hiked out via the Bright Angel. First day was near 110 degrees F...record high for the day, but then a front moved through and brought the best temps we have ever experienced in the canyon! Perfect! My new favorite hike! A 51 mile Rim to Rim to Rim with Michael(smudge), Chris(miztflip), Eric(thebeave7), Charles(CharlesD), Kari, and Joy. Unbelievably hot (110-ish) day made conditions less than ideal.

Can't wait to get back this fall (Oct/Nov) for a shot at a sub-12 hour double crossing!

Did the one day full 50 miles, starting at the Bright Angel TH, down S Kaibab, to N Kaibab, back up Bright Angel. Temps were atrocious, probably the hottest day of the year, and near record temps. Midday peaked at over 110 in the Box and around Phantom Ranch. The heat hit us all pretty hard, making the return trip slow, very very slow. Hiked with Chris, CharlesD, Chris F(Mitzflip), Michael(Smudge), and Kari. Definitely would not do that again under those temps.

South Rim to Phantom Ranch. We stayed at the Bright Angel Campground. Great four day trip. You have to love a hike that you can get a cold beer at the end of the trail

Spent several nights in the Canyon, covering Tonto Planteu, river and rim. This natural wonder never ceases to amaze me. Magical.
