This female Blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) was hanging out on a tree partway down the Deer Mountain summit trail. It didn't mind having people stare at it from fairly close range. As it turns out, this tolerance for people is a distinguishing characteristic of the females of this grouse species. The Blue grouse is also known as the Dusky grouse. July 2009.
