Moonchild's Magic in May

Moonchild's Magic in May

I took this pic just outside of Payson, AZ on Mother's Day. (May 11, 2008) Cool Poppy Fact # 362: Medicinally, California poppy is a plant with sedative, analgesic and antispastic powers. (Who can't forget the scene in the "Wizard of Oz," when Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion, Toto and Dorthy fall sound asleep in a field of poppies?) Also, the poppy's blooms close at night or in cold, windy weather and open again the following morning, although they may remain closed in cloudy weather.

Re: Beautiful!

Here I was, feeling sorry for people who
live where the snow doesn't melt until
June, and you tell me you have flowers
about ready to bloom. That is awesome!!
:)

Re: Beautiful!

We are going through our phases of color here: daffodils - gone. tulips - almost gone. rhododendrons - starting to bloom. phlox- starting to bloom. lilacs - starting, etc....
Spring has arrived!!! (:

Re: Beautiful!

My grandmother had a rhody in her front
yard in Puyallup. Not South Hill - near
River Road. California poppies require
full sun and good drainage to flourish,
so are particularly well-suited to rock
gardens. Does your garden ... ROCK??

Rather like

the "alpine poppy" (Rhaetischer Mohn) you find in the Dolomites, high above the tree line up to 10,000 ft. in rocky areas where practically nothing else grows.

Re: Rather like

Yes, Ejnar! Don't they even have an
Icelandic Poppy, with larger flowers of
15-20 cm wide? In AZ, they grow between
2500-5000 feet. Thanks for your comment!

Re: Cheery!

Mother Nature was sharing it, and I was
just passing the 'good news' on to the
next person. Thanks for your comment.
(I needed a brighter day, because my
Mother lives 750-miles away where the
snow doesn't melt 'till June.) :O)

Re: Cheery!

We just had 3 inches of snow last Monday night, which is a bit unusual for this time of year here. Spring time in the Rockies!

Re: Cheery!

Yes. Guess it won't be over 'till
it's over! Flagstaff, AZ, also got
3 inches, probably because it sits
at 7,000 feet. Utah and Idaho got
so much snow, that Santa Claus will
probably mistake June for December.
Those folks will have Christmas twice!
Take care!! :-0
