30 Colchuck Lake shore [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
30 Colchuck Lake shore

Low water has added to the camping possibilities at the S end of Colchuck Lake. You can see a bit of red tent through the trees. Most overnight hikers camp near the N end.

Derek and I once descended from Asgard Pass after a week in the Enchantments and laid out our bivy sacks on a huge flat rock on the S shore. It was a warm, comfortable night, and we were surprised when we continued down the lake to find that campers at the N end had been freezing all night in a stiff breeze off the lake. It must have come down from the pass between Colchuck and Dragontail, passing above us to level out on the lake. We never felt it.

We hiked around the lake in our running shorts to find other campers bundled up in down. I went swimming just to be annoying.

I dived off a rock on this day, too, just for old times' sake.

Colchuck Lake has to be my favorite body of water in Washington. The (glacial-influenced) scenery there is so dramatic, especially the north face of Stewart, which looks so different from that side of the Range. Thanks for posting, Eric! - Larry :)

I don't know which I like better about SummitPost - seeing new places, or being reminded of old favorites. You're right, Colchuck Lake is a special place. I wonder if I can drag my kids up there this year?
