Interesting slate erosional...

Interesting slate erosional debris while on the way up the south slope of Gardner Mountain. Any ideas as to rock type? Shale? Lots of iron present as evidenced by the rust color. July 4th weekend, 1998.

Shale?

When I was there this weekend I saw a few piles like this with red pieces and mixed in also some green pieces which was an interesting contrast. I wish now I had taken a photograph.
