Approach

From Highway 130 (see Getting There) take an established road north to Sugarloaf, Libby Lake, and Lewis Lake Campgrounds. The turnout is about one mile east of the obvious loop in the road, near Snowy Range Pass. Proceed to Lewis Lake Campground.

Route Description

From Lewis Lake, proceed north along the marked trail towards South Gap Lake. At South Gap Lake, which is between Medicine Bow Peak and Browns Peak, climb up Browns Peak, which is due east of South Gap Lake (see TOPOZONE). Once atop the large dome-shaped mass of Browns Peak, hike to the northeast edge of it, where a pronounced rise will mark the summit. Descend your ascent route back to Lewis Lake.

Essential Gear

General hiking boots, water, and proper clothing is sufficient for summer hiking. Trekking poles make things easier, too. For winter, crampons and/or snowshoes, ice axe, and warm clothing is essential for the steep climb.
