| Day 4 of my southern NV/UT tour. Enjoyable peak, but there's only a move or two of 3rd class to negotiate the headwall, and most of the knife edge is a hands-in-pockets walk, which was a bit disappointing. (The most challenging move is getting onto the knife edge ridge from the saddle, and even that can be avoided by following the cairns around the northern side rather than gaining the ridge directly).
I'd hoped to climb Virgin Pk in the afternoon, but the drive there was very long, and I turned back after walking a few miles to the old DPS TH when I figured I'd be lucky to even reach the summit before dark. I don't regret heading out there, though--the old dirt road I hiked along (washed out quite spectacularly in spring 2005) was quite scenic in its own right.
That evening, I drove on to Hurricane, UT, where I found a motel room for a couple of nights. I was pretty excited--my first visit to Zion NP, and if the excellent weather continued to hold, a chance at climbing the Guardian Angels. |
