| blmcclain | Route Climbed: Various routes but concentrated on the Northwest ridge Date Climbed: 16th November 2003 ![]() | |
| Started out at the Mitchel Canyon parking lot and meandered towards Balck Canyon. Moved up onto the ridge and had lunch on top of Eagle Peak. From there followed the northwest ridge up to the saddle between the North Peak and the South Peak. Followed the trail around to the south side of the South peak and deviated to scramble up Devils Pulpit - slick rock but a good deviation. Clouds closed in quickly and visibility dropped to 10 to 20 feet. Total route was 8 miles up and we drove down because of the worsening conditions. Hiked with hyperbolictans. | ||

| Fantastic weather after weeks of snow and rain. Not a cloud in the sky, but a bit hazy, so the views weren't perfect. I did the top half of the Four Summits route (Mitchell Rock Trail, Eagle Peak Trail, Bald Ridge Trail, North Peak Trail, Ascent via Devil's Pulpit) but pulled a muscle on the way up, so had to abort the 2nd half. I did Juniper Trail, Deer Flat Road, Mitchell Canyon Road on the way back -- longer, but no ascents. That route wouldn't be so great for ascending, no break in the uphill, plus the view of Eagle Peak from far below is not nearly as fun as the view from on top! North Peak and Mount Olympia next time... The Devil's Pulpit scramble was quite fun, and is highly recommended! | ||

| This doesn't even count. Camping on the mountain, they close the park gates at 2000 hours. Drove to the summit in cold rain about 2200 and was alone. Talked on CB as far as Foresthill, Santa Rosa, San Jose, Fresno, ect. Good radio outpost. I didn't climb it, but for the faux paux, a raccoon woke me at 0300 walking on me in the back of my truck looking for food. YOW! Got MY attention! Bonked my head on the camper shell big time. My yelling freaked out the only other folks in camp. | ||

| As part of a charity bicycle event - I rode my bike up to the top of Mt Diablo. The last 100 yards of the road are 17% grade which is incredibly steep to ride up on a bike. The ride down was scary as I was trying not to go too fast. I think I wore out my brake pads! | ||

| It was cool. Also I felt like I wanted to do it again. I saw turkeys and cows. I saw coyote poop. I went inside the building. There were stuffed animals there. As dictated to my mom. | ||

| Hiked this with Kim. Up in 2.5h. Fun hike, especially the lower parts. The top 1000' is a bit crowded. Not as many flowers as we'd have liked to seen, with all the cold & rain this spring. The paragliders were fun to watch. On the way up we got a bit lost. Missed the Juniper trail and ended up doing a mile or so along the road, then connected with the summit trail around 300 feet below the summit. | ||

| Enjoyable dayhike (Eagle Peak-Diablo-Devil's Pulpit-North Peak-Olympia) out of Mitchell Canyon. The scramble up to the main summit via Devil's Pulpit is fun class 2-3; the XC route between North Peak and Olympia is less so. | ||

| I started from Devil's Elbow right below the summit and descended to Prospecter's Gap between the main and North peaks. From there I followed the fireroad up to the North Peak. It gets really steep and loose right before the summit. I foung the highpoint right next to a huge antenna and stood on top. From there I followed the ridge straight down towards Mt. Olympia. I had to detour around a huge rock wall about halfway down (from the bottom it didn't look as bad). About 10 minutes of difficult bushwacking brought me to a saddle where I climbed some bad rock to a point that I though was the summit. Had to continue anothe 100 yards to the real summit. This route is supposed to be class 3 if you keep to the ridge, but what I did was probably difficult class 2 downclimbing. Found a geocache box at the top (not an actual summit log). Followed trails back to my car. I saw only 1 other person between North Peak and Mt. Olympia, even though it was a Saturday with pretty good weather. | ||

| What a beautiful day. This is a fun day trip. The trail became indistinct in a few places as the grass was overgrowing the trail even with the low rain year we've had. Shows how little this trail is used. Also there were a couple of washouts along the section of trail between Olympia peak and the North Summit. Met fellow SPer Don Bender and his two sons on the North Peak. Hiked to the South Peak with them. | ||

| I hiked this peak 3 times through various approaches which included Mt. Olympia trail and the road. It was certainly tough and strenuous but not too pleasant due to sun/heat exposure. I will try it again this winter.. hopefully it is nicer in cooler weather. | ||

| Only time I've been there was as the half-way point for a marathon that started from Clayton HS. Don't remember anything about the views, as it didn't seem too important after 13mi and 3500ft. Maybe I ought to drive up there sometime and enjoy it... | ||

| This was the normal approach by car to the top portion. We parked about a hundred feet under the summit and circled the peak until making it to the top. We were just in time for sunset, which was stunning. The sun was casting a yellow-orange glow right into the ocean next to the Golden Gate bridge and the whole area of water was just glowing brightly with the sunset. The view is amazing from up here as the tallest point in the area and you felt you could just reach out and grab the GG bridge. You also get the rest of the 360 degree view. On a clear day after rain with the sky very clean, you would have tremendous views from here. Also, make sure you don't come at the times that you'd expect to run into a lot of people (weekends, holidays, etc.) if you want solitude, due to the very easy access. | ||

| One of the hardest days of my life... All the 4000m peaks in the Alpes haven't been that cruel. We ran out of water in the searing californian sun... Still a nice mountain! | ||
