OverviewThe Mule Mountains are a small mountain range located in southeast Arizona. The historic mining town of Bisbee is located here. Like many of the mountains in southeast Arizona, the Mule Mountains receive few climbers. They just aren’t high enough to attract much attention. For years, it was believed that Mount Ballard was the highpoint of the range. However, more recent measurements have indicated that the nearby Fissure Peak may actually be a few feet higher. Regardless of which mountain is ultimately proven to be higher, both mountains are worthy objectives, and with a prominence of 2,660’, they're just big enough to make an appearance on the Arizona Prominence Map. Getting ThereFrom Bisbee, drive west on the main drag through town, known as Tombstone Canyon. At some point, this street turns into West Boulevard. Follow this road as it heads up to Mule Pass, about a mile away. This is the old road over the pass. Highway 80 goes through a tunnel beneath the pass. Park next to the white obelisk at an elevation is 6,030’. If you’re coming in from the west on AZ 80, turn left at a green street sign that says “Old Divide Road”. This will also take you up to Mule Pass.
