My fiance Julie wanted to try an easy fourteener so we decided to attempt Mt. Bierstadt on a Saturday in July, 2004. The route from Guenella Pass is straight forward with less than 3,000 feet of gain in only a little over 3 miles. This relatively easy fourteener with it's proximity to Denver makes it extremely popular. We probably saw at least 200 people on this hike which is totally above treeline. Our hike up was great and after summiting picked a more secluded spot to enjoy the peak away from the hordes on top. The hike down was in a light rain and we saw several folks without rain gear or the correct clothing. This day reminded me that even an easy fourteener can be difficult if you are not prepared. I took one look at the Sawtooth and new that I would have to come back and try it sometime possibly to summit Mt. Evans from Guenella Pass.

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."   --Calvin Coolidge
