I orginally bought these for football, and I ended up using them for skiing and winter hiking also. They are not windproof, but work well with a layer over them. Their wiking power is okay. They also dry really fast.

the one thing i dont like is the that this shirt chaffs my nipples after a few hours. it is a monor annoyance on short hike or nights of skiing but might be a big annoyance when someone is wareing this on a multi-day alpine climb i fint that the tight fitting under armour t-shirt fixes this problem

Here is what I have learned about wearing these extremely tight fitting tech shirts...at first I hated it and put what I bought away...decided I was just too claustrophobic for them. And then I figured out that the tighter the wicking under layer, the less chafening you took in extreme cold weather, thus what the winter Olympic athletes wear. I have learned to use this as my base layer in extreme cold temperatures, totally eliminates chafening.
