In the US, routes are generally rated on the Yosemite Decimal System. They go up to class 5, and things beyond that get decimal ratings like 5.8, 5,9, etc, up to about 5.14 (and even some letter designations like 5.14c), but there is no class 6 that I know of. Sort of like having an "11" setting on the stereo's volume control knob. :)
(Actually the link above refers to class 6 as aid climbing, but that isn't really part of the YDS, and has it's own set of ratings.)
the peak of my youth.....long hikes from Horsetail Falls without enough water and snacks....no wonder I got rubber-legged and wobbly. I always marveled at the south view too, and would fixate on Round Top and the Mokeluomene (spelled wrong) Peak.
