Pair of Small Heath Butterflies

Small Heaths (Coenonympha pamphilus) belong to the Nymphalidae Family and are a very common sight in May and July. They fly low in the meadows and on the edges of forests on both good and bad weather days. They flight is smooth and slow. Males and females look very similar, but the male has a much more defined dark spot on his upper wing. Their wingspan ranges between 30-36 milimeters. Females lay their eggs on grass. One egg per each blade of grass. Green caterpillars hatch a few days later. The Low Beskid - June 01, 2008.
