Climbing in Britain

by awkwardlanding » Sat Feb 18, 2006 3:03 pm

Has anyone outside of Britain dared to venture into the wilds of this tiny collection of countries?

Some poeple must have...i've seen many foreign tourists here, and they weren't all from London. What is it you want to know? (from a native)

I go down to Scotland on a monthly basis, because i've got a bunch of friends in Edinburgh and around Ballater where i can crash out, Ryanair flies to Prestwick from Nijmegen for less money than it would cost to take the train to Amsterdam, and besides that, i just f***in' hate the Netherlands, and not just the lack of hills there.

As a matter of fact, my flight leaves in about 23 hours. - Dan, wanna go out for a coffee on Monday or so?

Yeah I've done some climbing, scrambling and hiking in England, Wales, NI and Ireland. Perhaps natives would help you better but if you got some questions maybe I could help too?

I am a native, but I rarely see foreigners here because usually they have better climbing conditions. I'm wondering how they compare.

I climbed and hiked there cos I lived there for a long time anyway. But there are places worth a special trip despite bad weather and everything. For instance I'm sure I'll return to do the Cuilin Ridge someday as I never had time to go there. Don't be so pessimistic about the UK climbing locations, you got heaps of great stuff :)

I've been ice climbing and done some hill strolling around Glen Coe and Fort William.

Brilliant rock climbing in The Wye Valley, Gower Coast and Pembrokeshire.
Lots of little crags and quarries as well. Have a look at "Gower and S E Wales" a climbing guide produced by South Wales Mountaineering Club.

Yeh Wye Valley's brill. Done my scariest HVS there called The Russian, more like E1 with no protection at the crux :)

Don't tell them Charles, there's enough climbers over here already! But yes, metre-for-metre we've got some of the best mountains, rock and winter climbing in the world.
