Does a Super Gaiter double boot NEED to be waterproof?

by SabyR » Fri Sep 26, 2014 5:00 am

I have a pair of North Face S6K Extreme, the gaiter is laminated with a cheap Hydroseal membrane which has started to delaminate near the zipper, actually it has broke down from the Hulkillian pulling required to bring the zipper all the way up... So I will be replacing the zippers with something that will allow to zip them easier, some customizing is required... sigh...

Questions:
1) Do the zippers needs to be waterproof? Can a big industrial zipper do the tricks?
2) Do the boots needs to be re-waterproof? These are cold weather boots, does waterproof really matter when it is bellow 0 C (32 F)? There will certainly be walking in deep snow in mid-afteroon sun on occasions and what ever else winter can throw at me in the North East.

I do not mind paying to get them re-proofed but is it necessary when mostly hiking in the Whites or the Greens...

Thanks

Saby
(REALLY NF? Could you not go for Gore-Tex for the gaiter? At that price???)

Stay out of rivers and you'll be fine.

Edit: in your other post you say you just bought these. Return them.
