Highest Class 1 in Idaho??

by derekperc » Mon Jun 12, 2017 3:20 am

I love how there aren't trails on any ID peaks. I had a thought the other day that the tallest Class 1 ascent in the state I could think of is Sun Valley's Bald Mountain, which is ranked #1082 on LoJ. Can anyone think of a higher one?

There are many more higher peaks in Idaho with a trail to the top. The highest I can think of off the top of my head is Lookout Mountain in the White Clouds at 9954' (507th on LOJ for Idaho).

A few others:
Wildhorse Peak: https://listsofjohn.com/peak/34011

Custer Peak: https://listsofjohn.com/peak/33901

Off the top of my head, Ruffneck is also taller:

I think there are a couple of fire lookouts above 10,000', so those too. But I can't remember just now. :)

I don't know if it's the highest, but Twin Peaks South is 10,340 feet and is class 1. There is a 4wd road all the way to the summit.

It looks like South Twin has the highest lookout in ID so that's likely the winner. #329 on LoJ

I'll bet this one would almost qualify, 11,930':

This one also, at 12,009'. If there has been enough traffic, sounds like there may be unofficial trails to the top:

Look over these Idahole 11ers:

None of those would qualify as class 1. Peaks like Hyndman or even Borah have rough scrambler's trails to the top, but they still aren't class 1.

Of these, Hyndman would be the closest, but the trail vanishes when you get into the basin at around 10,000'. The final 1,200' ridge is terrain like this (not technical, but definitely not 'on-trail').

Indeed. I would say Hyndman's east ridge is just below class 3. It's steep, rugged terrain, but the rock is broken up enough that you don't have to use your hands.
