A 50-year old man died due to the heat on Table Top Mountain in south-central Arizona.

A professor visiting Arizona succumbed to heat exhaustion and died on a hike at Table Top Mountain on Wednesday afternoon. Pinal County Sheriff's officials say they got a call around 4:30 p.m. that a man had passed out while hiking. Officials say the 50-year-old man and two colleagues were visiting Arizona from Madrid, Spain. They set out on a hike in the morning and reached the top of the trail around 1:30 p.m.

On the way down, the man collapsed from heat exhaustion. His friends told sheriff's deputies the man was unable to walk and began feeling dizzy and disoriented. The victim’s friends said he complained his muscles were too weak to continue hiking so they attempted to carry the man down the remainder of the trail. The men then reported that their friend lost consciousness. One of the men decided to go for help. A passerby stopped and called 911. When deputies arrived, they found the man's friend giving him CPR.

The victim was pronounced dead by emergency medical units on scene. Officials say the men took water on the hike, but did not have enough for the extreme summer heat.

Temperatures were about 108 F (42 C). This is a sad event, but a reminder to be extremely careful on desert hikes especially when it's very hot.
