Anyone interested in spending New Year's eve/day in the mountains and overnight? Here in the Wasatch, or the Uintas - I'm sure it would be colder out there. Somewhere in BCC, LCC or AF?

Yes, as a matter of fact, we have been plotting the same thing. Overnight would be sweet, but as yet my partner is unconvinced. She would need to rent a warmer bag at REI, but well equipped outside of that.

Do you have any thoughts about where you want to go? We have tossed around the idea of an easy one up to Mt. Wolverine, but open to other ideas. It might be fun to watch the night pass with city lights to see too, if the air quality holds out, maybe up on Twin Peaks? We have touring gear too, fwiw, keeping options open. We don't have a specific destination in mind, nor a peak bagging desire, just want to enjoy the holiday in the mountains.

In my mind, the jury is out regarding whether it's romantic trying not to freeze to death all night or not. Heh!

Well, there is that little almost flat spot on the shoulder. Probably will be jammed though? With other like minded dolts also freezing. Fair bit of wood up there though, should be a fire.
It's a thought.

This is what I was thinking before I even opened this thread. Is there enough snow to make a decent pad on top or would it have to be lower down at the saddle? Would be a great place to set off fireworks if it wasn't a wilderness...

There is not enough snow on top for a pad right now, the shoulder has some bare spots under trees at the moment, two weeks ago i saw about 3 tent pads nearly snow free, the forecast calls for some snow Tuesday thru Thursday but it is looking rather wimpy, heading up that way in the morning, perhaps I'll give an update.

it has been done, On the West Ridge of the North Peak 3 years ago I found a fireworks launch site that had enough old tubes that five of us could not haul it off, I suppose some rich fuck in Oly Cove had quite the private show at least ten grand worth launched in my estimate.

That sounds pretty epic. I don't think I'll be able to make it up to the summit since I have to work at 6 AM the following morning. I wouldn't exactly worry about starting a wildfire on the summit of Olympus on January 1st though.

Good to see some people actually interested in this instead of posting stupid comments. I didn't have anywhere specific in mind; just wanted to try to spend time out there. Wolverine was be cool, I've never been up there, or on the shoulder of Olympus. I don't have any touring gear. I don't have an avy beacon right now either, so I wouldn't want to head up BF Twins, but I'll go to the meadow at 8400', or Lake Blanche; depends what peak you're looking to try to stay on, we'll have to see what avy danger is there and all that good stuff. I may buy a beacon during this week...just tryin' to decide which model I'd prefer. I wouldn't mind going up Twin Peaks (which ones were you referring to?), I just haven't been following the avalanche forecasts this past week. Let me know what your thoughts are.

Avy reports are looking terrible. This idea has hit a wall. We were headed down the road, all loaded up for Desolation Lake, two days of touring and an overnight, but then looked at UAC, a bit too late really. Didn't need to pack all this gear, because it looks like we aren't doing squat.
Ugh! Darn this weather! I guess I could get the dirt bike back out, head to Five Mile.
I just don't know what to do. All the stuff we were going to climb and ski is in High/Considerable zone right now, and it's a real bummer.
