Whitney Glacier gets a lot of rock falls (I mean rock avalanches) from both Shastina and other adjacent slopes. You have to run sometimes to avoid getting hit. That’s the reason it looks so dark and scary later in the season, which is now. I may still try to explore such a beautiful glacier (the longest in California) in a few weeks. :D

All I have seen is some significant rockfall. Once saw a SUV sized bolder hopping down the north side... missed me by 150 feet or so but within 60-70 feet of one of our group.

Could your hear it and feel it hitting the ground going boom boom boom as it got closer?

It was kindof eerie... all I remember is silence and screaming at my partner to run. While my other partner close to me calmly stated that it might smash her into nothingness.

Yeah Shasta has a lot more rockfall than avalanches. Both sides of the Whitney Glacier and even worse at Mud Creek Canyon. At either you can just sit there and every few minutes see some stuff coming down.

Dirty old rock fall. So what would be a good late spring route to take Daria on, in hope that she gets crushed by a car size boulder?

Eh- we would survive that, its all good. I will just climb with her over here where it is not a matter of if but a matter of when you get hit by rockfall.

There is no surviving down inside that canyon. You can stand on the rim and rock avalanches down the side every 2-5 minutes.

Try it otherwise this is going take too long.

Oh well, will have to wait a few years and go there. It would be good if you could predict earthquakes, then it would just be like, ok Daria lets go and climb Mt Dixon right now. We need big big big rockfall.

Wow! That is a long way to go to explain you took an innocent climbers tent!

Well, I had to. All events were linked with one another consecutively. Apparently none of the SAR team considered that, so if I did not take and bring down their tent we might have expected another big Search & Rescue party. I don’t think tax-payers, friends and families would have been happy with that. Or would they? :o

So did these other climbers get their tent back? I think if I came down and my tent and gear gone I would freak out a bit.
