Kallergi hut (crete)

by visentin » Mon Jan 26, 2015 3:06 pm

Hi !
We are two adults with our son (6 years old), and we are travelling in early April to Crete, and we are thinking about spending one night in the Kallergi hut. I have have several questions since finding info not in Greek is kind of tricky.
- Our idea is leave the car at the end of the Omalos plateau, or Xyloskalo, and start walking there till the hut. Is it possible to drive till Xyloskalo at this time of the year ? Can we park there ? Is it safe to leave the car overnight ? (I am aware that Samaria is closed, but this is not our plan)
- Does the hut provide breakfasts and dinners ? (I have read that yeas, but I prefer to be sure) Do we need to bring sleeping bags ?
- Are there a lot of people at this time of the year and is it beeter to book the night in advance ?
- Any description of the path from Xyloskalo to Kallergi hut ? In short, is our plan feasible with a 6 years old ?
Thanks !

Hi Eric,

can't answer all of your questions but: yes you can drive to Xyloskalo and there's a big parking lot out there. It caters to two huts (Kallergi being one) and there is a restaurant and a souvenir shop. I don't know whether it is safe to leave the car but I should say it is if you don't leave anything inside.

As for the weather you never know - I was there in early May and we had snow on the high mountains (Melindaou, Pachnes, Psiloritis. Xyloskalo should be safe.

Routes: there are two, a ridge route and a road route:

For the other questions maybe here:

Have Fun! Make sure you also go to Ginglios and Volakias on the other side of Xyloskalo ;-)
