Who's gonna hit up the backside this next week/weekend?
The snow levels look perfect for the vehicle approach.

Got any pictures? I'm just over the hill and itching to get out there.

How was snow on the south side through the day?

Was up there last weekend... dayhiked Green Butte ridge on Saturday. Great conditions but a bit windy and cold on the summit. I guess that was to be expected.

Snow on the ridge was great. Above Thumb Rock it is pretty much just crusty ice.

Someone had written in the register that no snow was on the Catwalk... and from a distance that certainly looked to be the case.

We climbed casaval ridge on Sunday. Catwalk is passable. There is snow, just less than normal.

How was overall snow quality? Snowshoes, secondary tool? Thanks

Figures... someone always say something isn't passable but then it is!

We took and used snowshoes... good to have with the hard crusty snow. We also took and did not use a secondary tool on our route. If I was to go to Casaval now I'd take snowshoes and no second tool.

we only brought snow shoes to camp.
just regular ice axe and crampons on the summit day.
Sunny and no wind. I brought WAY TOO MUCH CLOTHES. HOT.
We went up CR and came down AG and traversed back to camp from helen lake.
Icy crusty near misery hill but I saw skiers do it, it looked tough.
red banks is packed soft, albeit a bit sticky in the afternoon.
I want to go again in a few weeks with my skis on AG.

This weekend was quite busy on Mt Shasta. The weather was perfect; cold nights and warm days but not too much either way. Several people attempted the summit via Avalanche Gulch, Waste Face and Casaval Ridge. One girl did CR solo. Skiing on Shasta becomes more and more popular. There was a group of skiers Going up Avalanche Gulch and then dropping down via Konwakiton Glacier and traversing around and back to Bunny Flat.

I met nice people, including SPers. :)

For what it is worth, we have actually had a rather decent storm up here in Mount Shasta over the last 24 hours. I got almost 10 inches of snow at my house. That is the most I have had since sometime in March of 2013. The weather is supposed to clear up after this storm so climbing might be good.

Also, I spoke with someone at the Shasta T and they said that above 9,000 feet, Mount Shasta actually has an average snow pack so the climbing season will actually be rather good this year.
