Crossing The Jostedal Glacier

by hopp » Mon May 30, 2016 3:03 pm

Hi,
we'd like to cross the Jostedal glacier.

We think to start at Bødalsseter hut, from there up to
Brattebakken (http://www.ut.no/kart?lat=61.78307&lng= ... &ao=3.2212) .
According to the ut.no, there should be hike trial there.
Next over the glacier and finish desending the
Nigardsbreen (http://www.ut.no/kart?lat=61.69130&lng= ... &ao=3.2212)

I'd like to know the feasibility of this hike, because we don't prefer to hire a guide as we want to pass it on our own.
What is preferred route to cross the glacier ?

What are the conditions on the glacier, are there many crevasses ?
Is the glacier so alive, that crevasses are created per day? (So, it's impossible to cross without real local knowledge) Also related to this question is the necessity of a rope.

Are crampons a must or the condition of the glacier allows hiking without them. There is for example continuous layer of good hard snow.

The air distance is around 16 km, we think the whole hike is feasible in one day, but we'd like to sleep on the glacier.

We are experienced alpine climbers, but with small glacier experience.
We will appreciate comments or hint and tips, possibly also hike change, if there is better way to get up and down as ours.

Tusen takk!
Andrej & Peter
