Looking to do one of these two peaks on labor day weekend.
Anyone know snow conditions? is there a lot of snow? are ax and crampons necessary? can the snow be avoided at all?
predictions of labor day conditions based on current snow amounts?
If it's pretty bad, any suggestions on good places to go that are similar, but might have less snow? aka cottonwood lakes area or anything else?
Oft times, the High Sierra would be bone dry that time of year. We got a lot of snow this season, so there may be patches.
When we did Willie, the weekend after the holiday, there was some snow on the eastern side of Shepard Pass, but no problem as I recall. I solo'ed Tyndall in early May, needing crampons then, but in September, it then obviously won't be any problem.
Split is a dry route, so similar.
However for Labor Day weekend, if you haven't already got your permit, forget it. You may have some luck with Red Lake TH, it is little used, but you better check fast.
