Winter is a coming in the Sierra...

by The Chief » Mon Oct 04, 2010 5:48 pm

Was up hunting "Brookies" yesterday in upper Rock Creek and snow was a falling on me.

Winter is a coming fast.

NWS is forecasting up to 10" plus above 9k' after this storm passes with temps dipping into the teens at the same altitude in the eve. Be careful out there!!!

Looking towards South Morgan and BCS yesterday afternoon:

Whispers of snow began to fall on me as I was leaving:

It's storming in the backcountry now. Thunder, lightning, and rain woke me up in Bishop this morning. Every time the clouds part enough to reveal the high peaks I can see a blanket of snow in the Sierra and the White Mountains. Temperatures are cooling down too.

What project?

I think the chief is painting his house. Are you volunteering to help?

What I would like to read for once are on the sly interviews by a reporter based at one of our popular trailheads of those returning during the day after one of these early October fronts hits. Pics too of those with wet hair in shorts and light summer gear. Would simply need to drive up to someplace like South Lake's lot, notice how many cars were parked overnight to make it worthwhile, and expect most would be waking up the next morning near the crest, seeing all the white, and escaping. What would they honestly say?

In other news, sounds like Ebbetts Pass, Tioga Pass and Sonora Pass are closed due to snow. Read a report that there were 4 inches at Tioga Pass as of 2pm yesterday.

Woke up to a dusting of the white stuff on our deck this morning.

Snow level is down to 6800 this morning.

Word around town (Cal-Trans) is that there is close to 9-12" of the white stuff on Tioga Pass and they may just call it a year as the NWS is now forecasting some more winter weather next week.

I seem to recall more snow than that during the early October storm last year. We were climbing in Tuolumne in late October and folks were still climbing ice on North Peak in November. NWS Reno forecast discussion -
