Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail

Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail

From the trail just north of Ptarmigan Tunnel. Elizabeth Lake, a very popular backcountry camping spot, is in the lower left, with the wild country of the Belly River further to the north. Take note of the small snow patch near the middle of the photo. Just below and to the left of that point (enlarge photo and look for the shaded retaining wall), a tongue of scree streams down through the bright red rock; an exciting route leads up that scree, and includes a goat trail traverse along a steep cliff face. The goat trail ends near desolate Redgap Pass, where Seward Mountain can be easily climbed. July 21, 2008

Left or right?

Do you mean below and to the right of the snow? I do not see a shaded retaining wall to the left of the snowbank nor do I see a scree slope. It the location between the shaded retaining wall and the snow field?

Re: Left or right?

Hey Blake -

If you enlarge the photo, you can make out the retaining wall below and to the left of the snowbank. There's some scree just above and to the right of that stretch of wall (not very prominent) that I've twice used to access this route. The much more prominent scree field you are referring to (between the shaded retaining wall and the snowfield) leads to impassable cliffs.

It really is challenging to tell what I'm talking about by looking at this photo. Like many routes in GNP, it becomes much more obvious when you are actually on the trail.

Re: Left or right?

Thanks. Now I see it thanks. I was looking at the first shadowed wall and did not see the second. I am doing this route this summer. I appreciate the help.
