Great page on this peak certainly seen by Captain Cook!
Was in French Polynesia last month and heard from a local, who was very much an avid hiker, that he had climbed Rotui but wouldn't recommend starting any later than around 4 AM due to the heat and danger of inclement weather.
Good idea, but the only problem I can see with that it might be hard to find the trail in the dark. Or maybe it is better now.
