Face only a mother could love ..They say their face evolved that way,
in order to capture the minute sounds that
only a pack of rats can make ..

Re: Face only a mother could love ..Well, I'm not a mother, but I sure love this face.
Interesting "saying" about their face evolved so that they hear the sound rats make. Well, I'm not sure about that because I don't have a face like that and I can hear the sound that rats make. May be I'm part a barn owl!

Re: Face only a mother could love ..Ha, ha ... no, it's true.
They can detect the most "subtle" of sounds,
like the pitter-patter of tiny feet on the
shadowy floor of a barn.
Their face acts like a "catcher's mitt" to
detect sounds before pouncing on their prey
and finishing them off ..
Kinda like a miniature killing machine!
Believe it ... or not!

Re: Face only a mother could love ..I believe it. I think all the fine hairs on their face will vibrate with the sound waves. After all, sound is only vibration of the air molecules.

Re: Face only a mother could love ..You got it ...
And, the "shape" of their face
directs the waves inward, similar to the
satellite dish atop some people's homes.
Unless, of course, you got stuck with cable.

Coyotes...Coyotes have no fine hairs and no satellite dish faces yet they hear, with pin-point accuracy, a mouse three feet under the snow. It takes that kind of sensory perception for an animal to survive in the wilderness.

Re: Coyotes...I've seen coyotes hunting in threes ...
their strategy (in the Verde Valley of AZ) is
to hunt in a specific direction towards the Verde River in broad daylight ..
smaller rodents and larger prey, such as rabbits, are "chased" down to the edge of
the river, where they have "no place to hide"
and are easily taken by the hungry coyotes.
A happy coyote is a well-fed coyote.
Thanks for the interesting chit chat, Marc! !
