70 Peaks In 30 Days  Sucess!

This was part of a month long solo peakbagging trip in which I hiked every day and got 70 peaks in 30 days. Camped in Gold Valley, did both the main and east peak. Went on for a few more peaks later in the afternoon.

For numerous photos and brief route descriptions see the trip report.

2nd Ascent  Sucess!

I was able to beat the rain, which didn't start until I was driving back out. The views into Badwater and over to Telescope were dramatic today with the clouds.

From Gold Valley  Sucess!

The hike itself was nothing to write home about, but the views from the summit into Death Valley were pretty spectacular. Third day of a four day peakbagging trip. We climbed Ibex Peak in the afternoon.

Alternate Route  Sucess!

I parked where the road braids briefly to avoid a washout. I was able to back into the "old" section where it was flat, allowing me to park "legally" and also be off the "new" road in case anyone else drove in after me (no one did, I didn't see another soul all day). This is just west of point 4625 (which would be on the right, or north side of the road). I was looking for a longer hike, and the condition of the road going further would have made for more difficulty than I was willing to bear in the dark. I slept in the back of the XTerra, and set out on the road towards the peak, taking the left fork where the DPS guide says "bear right". Where that fork starts bending back to the north, head out across the desert to the obvious canyon ahead of you. From there the route follows the DPS route. On the return, I headed mostly east from the saddle to tag the south east azimuth mark, and continued on the ridge until I found a ridge that looked promising to descend back down to Gold Valley. The total trip came in at 11.7 miles.

from Gold Valley, looped over the ridge  Sucess!

Another one of those pleasant surprises. Drove out from Vegas in the morn, took the DPS route up, but looped back over the ridge to SE-- nice variety, went over the mysterious "Smith Mtn Az Mk" (an azimuth check benchmark?). A 2003 subaru outback with just 7.3" clearance did fine with mrchad9's "if you have 2wd" route. The stretch from 7 miles past Greenwater Rd, to 8.5 miles, is rough, but with careful wheel placement, I never bottomed out.

From Death Valley  Sucess!

No 4WD, so took the 6,000ft hike up from the pavement on the west side. Trip Report

From Gold Valley  Sucess!

Took the standard route up the gully from Gold Valley the day after Thanksgiving. Quick and easy, and very cold in the morning, but the views were very enjoyable. Was back down by lunchtime, then up the south ridge of Funeral Peak.
