rgreeneRoute Climbed: Pacific Crest Trail -- County Line Direct Variant Date Climbed: 18 April 2004  Sucess!

Saw this peak was listed as a must-do for "peak bagging neophytes" plus it's the county high point for Alpine county, so I had to get busy. Sonora Pass was closed, adding a "scenic" 4 mile walk up 108 (I like to call it the Great Nation of RGreene's Highway 108 because that road was all mine!) in near white out conditions. Thanks CA weather for breaking this particular weekend. Camped at some trailhead just west of the pass (trailhead sign was buried under snow), did a "long" (4 hours) route involving no topo's and no GPS waypoints -- just line of sight to the highest peak, and requiring crampons (for the entire trip) and ice axe (for a traverse across a paticularly steep face). Weather was brutal -- high winds and super cold (my water bottles haven't melted yet after the 7 hour drive home) but crystal clear after the night of infamy. Not much snow to posthole in, it was all windswept and icy. Anyway, got to the top, enjoyed the gunnery seargent nest, tried to dig out the summit register in the 4 feet of snow inside the nest, gave up because I was about to get frostbite, and took 30 minutes to get back to the trailhead. CA COHP #19.

Less snow than I expected given the late snowfall this year. I climbed up to the peak and then hit every bump on the ridge between it and Stanislaus. Excellent views of mountains that were unfamiliar to me at the time.

Climbed Sonora along with Stanislaus amidst the sound of gunshots on the 1st day of hunting season. Easy walkup, quite windy at the top.

A nice hike with a great view. The hike can be shortened by more than a mile by not follwing the PCT. Take the obvious use trail north (up the ridge) from the parking lot. There is a steep 200-300 foot loose slope climbing past the obvious rock outcrops before meeting the PCT. Cross the PCT and continue up the ridge on the normal route.

Beautiful spring hike! Returning via the PCT proved a bit tricky due to snow, but had lovely vistas of pointy rocks. Hike report and pics are here.

Another beautiful day on top. Had the pleasure of sharing it with my Mom. Snow still covers much of the Yosemite High Country. Only a few patches of snow on the hike up, nothing that couldn't be bypassed.

This hike is nice and short, and surprisingly not too heavily traveled from St Mary's pass. If you are looking for a shorter peak with a good view, but without the people, this is one of your best bets. For something a little bit harder, try Leavitt Peak just to the South across 108.

My first time on anything higher than 10, 500 ft. in getting ready for Mount Shasta. It was a fun hike with great views. It was a very quick trip too. I summited and was back home in Modesto by 3:30 p.m. It is a good peak to do in combination with Stanislaus Peak.

I was on the summit before sunrise, which turned out to be an extra treat. Combined with a climb of Stanislaus Peak. Trip Report

Yeah, it's easy, but this is the peak that got me hooked. Really nice views, albeit a bit hazy on the day I visited.
