spengyFun Little Hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 25, 2007

spengy

I decided to go during the late afternoon. Hiked up fairly fast (probably twenty or thirty minutes at most) because I wanted to take pictures and wanted good light. Enjoyed the view from the top. (The Brighton Lakes are beautiful) On the climb down I ran into a Moose. He was eating and getting ready for bed ;)

This ridge run is very nice for views and for a good workout. We began at the Bear Trap Fork TH and came from north to south and to west to Catherine Pass before heading down. Eight hours of fun. 7-22-08 a partial ridge run including Twin Lakes pass from Silver Lake, Wolverine, Tuscarora and Pioneer Peak. R/T from Nordic Center bldg was 4.5 hours. Came down to Brighton from the top of the Crest Express lift. Wowed by the wild flowers all along the route. Again on 4-21-09 Part of Brighton Bowl ridge snow run - see write up on Mt. Wolverine summit log. #7 (at least) 4-20-10 Part of Brighton Ridge run on snow like last April. With Dave, Brent and Walt. #8 12-27-11 Part of solo Brighton Bowl ridge run-very hairy ascent from Pioneer/Sunset saddle.

Hiked the Brighton Ridge to Millicent, Woverine, Tuscarora, Sunset Peak, and Pioneer Peak. Tremendous fun! Millicent's NE ridge is easy snow hiking. Wolverine/Tuscarora is easy snow hiking as well. Sunset is a bit harder because there is a Class 3/4 rock spine in the middle of the ridge. I chose to bypass the rock spine onto a 38 degree, north facing slope which brought me back onto the ridge. Only use that bypass under total stable snow conditions. Pioneer Peak was a beast. 3' snow drifts on the ridge about every 20 feet. Hiking down off of Pioneer was 2' of soft powder all the way to Brighton. Good workout! Views are oustanding. Highly recommended.

Best way to get away from the crowds on the Catherine Pass trail, though why people tend to avoid the steep bits, I'll never understand!

eric9262Rain and sleet on Sunset Peak  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 1, 2006

eric9262

Last day of a three day trip and this hike was good since the weather was threatening. The clouds were coming up the valley from Albion Basin and three steps from the summit I felt rain. It was pouring rain two minutes later and sleeting five minutes after that. I came down fast in steady rain and near the Catherine Pass trailhead lightning started. I was very uncomfortable walking under a chairlift with lightning nearby. I found out later planes were flipped in Provo from a microburst about the time I was on top. Very scenic and I'll do this again (weather permitting).

I first climbed it as part of a college hiking class in the late '90s. July 29,2006: I must have been crazy because we went up to Catherine Pass on a HOT Saturday morning (the crowds are why I usually avoid popular destinations in the Wasatch on Saturdays). 12 minutes from there to the top, and 9 minutes back to the pass. August 31, 2008: Started run at Big Water in Millcreek, rounded Dog Lake+Desolation Lake, reached turnaround at summit, returned via GWT+MillCreek. Got wet just before the end of the trip.

Went up the canyon with a friend and started walking. Didn't really plan on much, as I was in flip-flop sandals. We made it to the summit in around 50 minutes and back down in 25. No more hiking in flip flops, though I got lucky this time.

This was a far more enjoyable summit than I expected. My favorite of all the easy peaks I have done so far.
