The Great Cairn Convention!

In general, routes in Peru have few cairns, let alone signs. Very different from hiking in, say, the European Alps. Here is why: they had all gathered right here, thousands of them! I don't know when the convention will be over, but if you want to join in on the fun, it's at the Mirador de los volcanos, the highest point along the road between Arequipa and Chivay. In the mean time, I'll just have find my way around without cairns. The best maps available are scale 1:100000, and in my experience, the 50m interval contour lines are quite reliable. 20 May 2011.
