Re: Nice catch ...Thanks all I did was catch her. We are getting more of these bigger fish in NW Montana and I am glad about that. Catching these big fish is really a passion for me and I always release them. I am not a "fly only snob" but prefer to fish with my fly rod. As far as the fly only water we have not gotten to that level here yet but some of the waters have restrictions such as barbless hooks and one fly etc.
I too like eating trout but frankly a smaller 10-12 inch trout tastes a LOT better than these big ones. I will occassionally keep a few to eat when I fish in the mountian lakes. Many times these lakes are so over populated that keeping a few to eat does the other ones a favor.
I have heard about the fishing at Strawbery and would like to make a trip down there to fish.

One hellof a catch. I am not sure I would have been so compassionate. But, I can see why you would want to release the big boy.

Re: One hellYa she was a biggie. There are more out there. A buddy of mine just caught a 14 pound rainbow about 1 mile from my house. Put them back and they might get a chance to get bigger.

Tough call for meThe keep or release part, that is. I typically release trout I catch with a fly but 11 lbs would be kinda tempting. I have caught a few non-native 25-30 lb salmon in my life -- they're meant for chowin' down. My biggest rainbow was a hatchery raised 3.5 pounder, I hooked and released a decent wild 2 lb brookie once and I have never had a steelhead up to my hands--have hooked and lost a couple. That is my dream fish.

Holy shit......Thats one big fish. Way to release it back into the wild. That kind of action should earn you some big karma points.
