Tecolote Peak

Overview

Tecolote Peak is a long ridge summit running north and south on the eastern side of the Sandia Mountains. The true summit is in the middle of it's ridge. The hike to the summit may be easy but this peak does have some steep cliff walls on its sides. While it is not the tallest peak on the east side of the Sandia Crest it still offers nice views of the surrounding area.

Getting There

Go east on I-40 to exit 175 (Tierjas). From the exit ramp turn left (north) and go under the highway continuing north on Rt 14. Follow Rt 14 north for approximately 6 miles and turn left (west) onto Rt 536. Continue up Rt 536 to the Dry Camp pull off which is a 1/2 mile past the Tree Springs Trail parking area.

Route Overview

There is only one trail leading to the summit of this peak. The trail is well marked and maintained. This peak has some cliffs, very rough terrain, and thick undergrowth making bushwacking to the summit a very unplesant adventure.

Tecolote Peak Trail: This trail is very well marked and easy to follow to the summit. This trail swithbacks a few times before gaining the summit ridge. The trail passes the summit and makes a small loop allowing for some nice views to the south.

Red Tape

There is a $3 per car fee to park the trailhead. Payment envelopes and stations can be located in the parking area as well.

Camping

There are no campgrounds in the Sandia Mountains. There are numerous commercial camping sites aloug route 14 between I-40 and route 536.
