Marinsinho Peak

Marinsinho Peak is a slightly smaller version of Marins Peak. Just 33m (108 ft) smaller than Marins Peak. On a straight line the distance between the two mountains is just 1.2km, or 0,74 miles. Even so, a deep valley separates the summits, around 400 m (1300 ft) and 500 m (1640ft). Some people say it belongs to Marins massif but I disagree. There is a huge geological failure which makes the deepest part of the valley, cuts the land in two pieces.

The view from Marinsinho peak summit is unquestionably better than Marins summit. You can see the great almost vertical wall of Marins Peak (around 75° - 600m), and surrounding summits such as Pedra Redonda and Itaguaré Peak, impressive mountain. 

In fact, the traverse name is “Marins – Itaguaré”. Doing the traverse you start walking at 1.560m (5.118ft). If you want to you can sleep at the base of Marins, 2.240m (7.349ft) or at the summit itself, 2.427m (7.962ft). From that point you’ll pass by Marinsinho Peak (2.394m – 7.854ft), Pedra Redonda (2.215m – 7.267ft) and sleep at the foot of Itaguaré Peak (summit at 2.308m – 7.572ft), after that you’ll go down at Itaguaré base, a private property at 1.450 m. It is one of the most popular and traditional traverses of Brazil along with Serra Fina traverse and Petrópolis – Teresópolis traverse (this one, one of the most beautiful of all South America!).

Well, that means something, if some day you come to Brazil, it is a “must do” thing. Plus, the summit of Marinsinho is composed by several huge boulder rocks, you can have some fun up there.





 
 

Getting There

From São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro drive (or take a bus) to Piquete city, North of São Paulo state. There you must get one exit to "Bairro dos Marins". Ask for directions, people will help you, no problem about that. Once you get to that neighborhood is easy, follow the muddy road all the way up to Milton's farm. Be aware: This muddy road requires a 4x4 to go up in wet season!!!
The view to Marins group will be breathtaking from that point on...

Fees and Red Tape

Parking lot at the farm for the traverse route;
Well marked trail;
R$ 20,00 per night, per car(around US$ 13.00) fee.
If you hike it by the direct route (the end of the traverse as i did), no fees at all.

What’s forbidden:
At all costs, don't make fire or deforest any places. Respect the nature and wildlife please!

Camping

  

Simple, several spots can be used:

At the summit of Marins Peak;
There is plenty of space for aprox. 20 – 25 tents before the summit of Marins Peak, around 2.300 m high;
If you go up at winter, high season, the summit can get very busy and you wont find space;
Where I camped there is a great spot for 3 tents;
2 minutes before the summit of Marinsinho Peak there is a spot for two tents.

All of these sites are very easy to see by distance.
