360° panorama from Ta'Dmejrek

Ta'Dmejrek (253m) is the highpoint of Malta. It's right by the side of Triq Panoramika, a scenic road along the Dingli Cliffs. From this spot I took 13 pictures and later stitched them together; a somewhat unfortunate side effect of the process is that the far left and right hand sides of the panorama appear higher than they really are. When I took this picture I wasn't sure if I was on the highest point of Ta'Dmejrek. The green area in the center has lots of bumps that are quite similar in height, and without an accurate way to measure them it was hard to say which one was the highest. I went to all bumps that I thought might be the highest, and took more pictures of what appeared to be other candidate highpoints. This one was the first. Later I contacted the University of Malta, and they kindly provided more detailed information that convinced me that this is the country highpoint. For the record: there is an open quarry right next to the area with these bumps, so some of them may in fact be old tailings. Nor can I rule out that the highpoint of Malta used to be somewhere else nearby, but isn't there anymore because it's been quarried. On a different note: Ta'Dmejrek is very close to the coast, roughly on the southwest side of Malta. Follow the direction of my shadow and zoom in (on the original photo) and you can see the capital of Valleta and its surrounding towns, on the other side of the island. 26 Dec 2016.

Congratulations Sir!

A fine bit of amateur surveying and photo-shopping even if not quite making it as a mountaineering epic, in traditional Peak Monster style. I take it you and Jan didn't need the rope ; )
Keep 'em coming - you have a few more to do... (and see you in Wales - I'm about 20 years overdue for another ascent of Snowdon - and you'll like the Crib Goch Ridge...)
best wishes Mark

Re: Congratulations Sir!

A nice aspect of highpointing is that it makes you visit places and countries that you might not have thought about otherwise. Ta'Dmejrek wasn't interesting, but Malta gave us a fine rock climbing holiday, and the sunset above the Dingli Cliffs was spectacular.
Oh, and we did have double ropes - in the car.

By the way, for stitching I use the Image Composite Editor by Microsoft; I don't have Photoshop. ICE is free, real easy to use and the result is usually pretty good. In this case the less than ideal images that I took are the reason that the left edge appears a little higher than it really is, not the software. It can correct only so much.
