Snowshoes up to a nice windblown summit. Great day!
Last day of winter, according to the calendar, not mother nature. We wanted to do Democrat and Cameron, as I only had those two left in that range, but winds (crazy) prevented us from getting over to Cameron. There's always next time.
Kessler, Shaylee , Kimberly and I decided to climb Mount Democrat. Mount Democrat was chosen because Shaylee wanted to do a 14er and it was the closest 14er to our house that I already haven’t done and since we missed this one last year when we climbed the other nearby peaks. It was also a short climb and I needed to get back early because I had things to do.
After driving to the trailhead we set off for the summit at 8:30 am (in summer it would be better to start earlier, but there was no threat of thunderstorms today). We made it to the summit in a fairly fast 2 hours 20 minutes, taking two rests along the way. After spending nearly an hour on the summit we set off back down to Kite Lake. It was a perfectly clear day with not a cloud in the sky.
A road closure early on tacked on another 9 miles to the trip. Had just enough time and energy to bag Democrat and drop back down. It was a very cold morning!
A great loop
Only one peak that day.
start of my Decalibron circuit in one day. This was good high altitude training for Pico de Orizaba. Landed at DIA at 9am, after picking up rental car and snacks, arrived at Kite Lake trailhead at 1:30pm. 1hr 45mins trailhead to the top of mt Democrat (with very little wind).
The weather couldn't have been more perfect.
From Kite Lake.
The alpenglow high up on Democrat on this early morning was spectacular. We had no idea the weather would be deteriorating soon after, but held long enough to climb Cameron and Lincoln. This was my wife's first big Colorado peak. Yea!
Cold windy day
In combination with Cameron, Lincoln and Bross. Typical climb I wasnt too into all the people tho.
"Ideologically speaking, I chose left and it brought me to Democrat". Summited via the standard route. Made for a great first climb for my wife.
Perfect day for climbing. We only did Democrat due to the fact that my climbing partner (my daughter) just came from Hong Kong 6 days before. But the day was absolutely clear. A little breezy along the ridge but that is normal. Even later in the day the notorious thunder showers never showed up so we could have done all three with out rushing. Met a lot of nice people on the trail, including a Father and Son with their 4 Australian Shephard dogs (very well behaved, did not see them chase any wild life). Looking forward to next climb.
Climbed Democrat, Lincoln and Bross in one day.
Went up from Kite lake on the 4th of five days of peakbagging (Massive, Huron and Harvard on the previous 3 days)in the area to do the Decalibron but had to retreat from 14,000` along with many others due to rapidly approaching morning storms. Hiked down in thunder-sleet.
