This was my fourth climb of Massive. This was via the standard route from the east.
This was my first climb of Massive. It was via the SW ridge.
Calendar winter ascent via the east ridge from Leadville Fish Hatchery. Took the broken Highline Trail all the way to 11200' with group of 7, then followed a fresh trench to treeline courtesy of legendary Ken Nolan and Co. Winds were moderate on summit with 15 degree temp. Great winter route. 10.75 hours total hiking time (13 miles/4900'), so it would be a much longer slog with no trench to follow.
Massive & N. Massive from the west
Wonderful, frigid and snowy night climb with some friends up the South-West slopes route. Steep enough to slide all the way down!
Steep climb. Great new trail. #19
Great hike. We only saw 1 other person all day!
Spent the day almost entirely alone as we encountered only one other person on a perfect day over Massive. ^^^^ ask her, she knows.
The weather was strange. Normally one has to watch out of afternoon storms, but on this day the storms were in the morning and they cleared out by noon.
Sadly, Massive was my only climb in 2006. A very long hike, that wrecked my knee for a while, and I had to wear a brace on hikes for a while afterwards. It was rainy when we started, but no lightning all day, could only see about 200 feet in any direction from the summit, but we were the only ones up there. A nice trail!
The views from this summit are still fresh in my mind. Loved it! Hiked the SW slope trail. The 14er's initiative group was doing trail work on it then, great work!
Left halfmoon trailhead at 8:30am, arrived on the summit at 11:15, took a nice 1hr lunch, then back to the truck by 3:00 in the afternoon.
backpacked up to tree line, got poured on at night, and awakened to the perfect day for this hike.
Enjoyable hike up the southwest slopes. Weather a bit overcast.
Gorgeous meadow walking and wildflowers made this a delightful hike. Summit was in and out of clouds, but what a view every time it cleared out! Drained the last of our Yukon Jack on the summit :-(
My third 14er.
Weather looked a little iffy, but it turned out to be a great day. Climbed with Ian, up in 4:20, down in 3:20.
Fun day. Weather on top was perfect, spent almost an hour eating lunch.
Planned on doing the SW Slopes but ended up in the amphitheater where we hit the West Couloir right up the gut. A little longer but better scenery. Descended SW Slopes. Awesome weather and amazing views.
Overcast skies caused me to push a bit harder in an effort to beat the weather, but nature allowed me on the summit and even brought a bit of sun near tree line on the descent. Encountered parades of hikers above tree line, but hiked back nearly alone.
Climbed it at night on a fullmoon and stayed on top for the sun to rise. CLimbed both subpeaks. Very beautiful.
