Massive SW Slopes  Sucess!

Great hike on a great trail! The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative is doing outstanding work!

We went up and down on the SW Slopes Trail from N Halfmoon Creek trailhead.

An excellent day!

Route Climbed: West Slopes  Sucess!

From North Halfmoon TH. Intended to do all the 14,000+ summits, but only did "Massive Green" and Massive due to bad weather. Beautiful basin around Halfmoon Lakes, much unpleasant loose rock and scree to the North Massive saddle and then again on the descent down some other gully.

From N. Halfmoon TH  Sucess!

Started up at 6:00AM with ideal weather, missed the new CFI trail and ended up around the west side and scrambling up the huge basin (not easy). I picked the right line as I reached the top about 100 yards west of the summit. Lots of people on top, spectacular views all-around, stayed about 20 mins then back down the CFI way and back to the TH at 12:10PM. My 24th 14'er and another gorgious Colorado morning. Sweet!!!

SW Slopes with No Pants  Sucess!

Of all the things to forget; my pants. Yep. In the pictures, I'm the one in the long underwear.

Big Kudos to the CFI for a super-nice nice trail!

The Tour  Sucess!

Bagged all 5 14000' summits from the west side. Really easy hike except for a bit of route-finding on the descent into upper Halfmoon Creek basin. A bit of rain/snow came through later that day after we were back in camp.

Mt Massive TH Ascend E Slopes  Sucess!

This was one long hike. On the way up we were passed by several "youngsters", who, when we caught them on the top were quick to praise how well we "old" people were doing, then proceeded to beg Advil from us. Go figure!

Utterly Exhausted  Sucess!

Made it to the campground across from N Mt. Elbert Trailhead early the day before and spend a relaxing day reading and exploring my surroundings. I car-camped that night, and right after sundown, I began to hear little noises all around me. I had no idea what made them, and I imagined my car being ransacked by a rogue bear. I then saw a small, furry object dart across my windshield. I heard the mice everywhere, on the hood of my car, in the engine, and possibly in my trunk. This continued for the remainder of the night, and by around 4 AM, I had earned only about an hour of solid sleep. Frustrated, I drove to the trailhead, where I slept for about 30 minutes before my car was again besieged by rodentia. At the first disturbance, I decided to begin my hike.
The sun was just beginning to rise as I climbed above treeline. I got a feel for how absoluty HUGE Mt. Massive is. The summit ridge seemed to stretch forever. The mountain was nearly as deserted as the campsite had been; I saw only one group of two hikers the entire time. I meandered through a few hundred yards of talus and large boulders to summit under very windy conditions. I ate lunch one the summit.
It had been my plan to bag as many of Massive's summits as I could that day, but due to a nearly nonexistant night's sleep, I was too exhausted to get more than the main summit.

Route Climbed: Colorado trail Date Climbed: July 2005 +++  Sucess!

Actually summited this mountain three times. Recently, this past July with a friend who sadly, didn't mke it.

Not, in my opinion a very interesting mountain. But it's close, easy and fairly quick.

I took the east slope down, ran is more like it. That was fun. Good practice on the rocks.

Very good trail, and straightforward route. Took about 7 hours round trip, and GPS measured about 13 miles. Make sure your boots fit well.

REU Nerdcamp 2002!

I saw this mountain from Elbert last summer. I would really like to have a picnic on its upper slopes someday. Just three years ago climbing it made me breathless, and I jogged up Elbert last summer. Mountains make you strong.

Route Climbed: Tour De Massive (Partial) Date Climbed: June 11, 2005  Sucess!

We went up from North Halfmoon to the summit of North Massive. We had to kick steps to reach the ridge below North Massive. We then travesed back towards Massive Green and then Massive before heading back to the trailhead. The whole adventure took about 7 hours. A very nice way to see that this mountain really is 'massive'.

A really tough hike but very rewarding.
