near the finish...

although technically not difficult, this type of sandstone is very slippery, most rock features have a layer of dusty sand on it. There were two pitons there for protection.

The Danger

I just wonder how much harm climbing can do over time to all these sandstone towers of the American SW.

Re: The Danger

I should post some photos of the rope wear too...
You are right, Jacek. The sandstone is incredibly soft and I can imagine climbing this with an ice ax - that would really cause tons of harm. I think it is beautiful to summit desert towers, but the quality of the rock is much better elsewhere...

Re: The Danger

Liba, maybe not a great thing to do...don't need too much advertising about this topic (guess we all just need to be as careful as we can). Just my humble 5 cents :) Great photo, cheers.

Re: The Danger

Hi Radek, I mentioned ice axes, but I would never do that... I do not like to alter nature that way. It just felt so soft at some spots...

Re: The Danger...

For crying out loud ...

Liba, I'm giving you 10/10 for your courage,
but please don't tear up these natural treasures that mean so much to us, and got me
so many darn votes here on SP !!! : ))

Just wondering. How much does the average
climbing rope cost in today's market ???

Re: The Danger...

Larry, I was very gentle... did not tear up anything I hope.... did not even scratch my initials on the top of this monument as some other climbers did.... Thanks for giving me points for my courage....

it looks like you are climbing up the back of the head on a huge Michelangelo statue.

Re: statue of David

Agreed - and poor David just got a huge kink put in the back of his neck!

Re: how

and how did you like it? I was so thankful to Otto for drilling in the handholds...otherwise, I would not be able to make it up...

Re: how

and cheap one too... I read that he got paid 1$ per month for sort of being in charge of Colorado National Monument...
Well, I admire him for climbing that route in 1911.

I wonder if he was crazy enough to imagine that it would one day be a "tourist" route?
