A must do hike before leaving?

by Miroslava » Tue Jul 12, 2011 8:03 pm

A likely move to Europe is in the cards. I want to do several more hikes in the Sierra before packing up.
I enjoy flowers, lakes, and summits on 10-15 mile hikes. My parents restrict me to lower elevations (mostly below 12000ft) and mostly to trails, although i do like some class 2 bouldering :). Also I am not allowed on steep snowfields (We had to turn around on Elwell last week just for that reason) and I don't think I like snakes (I am not sure if I am going to grab one when I see it).
Hikes considered:
Mount Lola
Tinker Knob
Elwell
Sierra Buttes
Leavitt Peak
Hoffmann
North Dome
Lookout Peak (Kings, Don Cecil)
Spanish Mountain
Three Sisters
Alta Peak or Winter Alta

Hikes liked:
Tallac
Granite Chief
Mount Rose
Clouds Rest

Thanks,
Mira.

I like Leavitt Peak and Alta Peak out of that group, considering what you described you are looking for. Florence Peak is very nice too, but is it pretty steep class 2.

But no lakes or streams on route to Leavitt or Alta, that's why Winter Alta is considered instead although it's class 2.
I admit Florence, Vandever, and Vogelsang are a bit of a stretch. Removed from the list.
Thanks!

A great way to hike to the summit of North Dome is from the Porcupine Creek trailhead on Hwy.120 .From there you can hike east on the North Rim trails to Yosemite Point and the outlook at Yosemite Falls . The view of the Lost Arrow is staggering . Descend the Falls trail ,lunch in the Valley , and take YARTS back to Porcupine Creek . There are wonderful views and very few people until the Falls.

We did a hike from the Valley to the overlook above the Upper Falls at the end of May. Very beautiful hike. What is Lost Arrow?

The Lost Arrow is a fantastic spire east of Yosemite Falls on the the North Rim of the Valley . The first ascent was a landmark in modern climbing. There are tons of pictures of the tyrolian traverse from the tip on the internet. On the other side of the Valley there are also two spires across from Middle Cathederal there are fabulous fifth class climbs with no walk up or walk off routes. Eichorn Pinnacle in Tuolumne Meadows is another great climbing spire .

My father was there and he says it's nice (especially outside of hunting season). My mother refuses to go anywhere where the travel is on gravel road for a significant amout of time. So, I have no chance of going there.
I have been on Snow Valley Mountain though :)

+1 for Snow Mountain! It is a neat adventure wander and may still have snow lingering about (snow in the Coast Range in July?! Now that is cool!).

I would also recommend doing the Crystal traverse, go up Pyramid Peak from Hwy 50 and just stay on the ridgeline to Agassiz and Price (mostly class 2 with some 3 perhaps) then walk back via Lake Aloha. Lots of views, not too crowded, plenty of water features, and millions of flowers!

Have fun!
