Camping on Mount Mitchell

by ytimk » Mon May 17, 2010 9:30 pm

Hi all, I am planning a trip to Mount Mitchell next month and am not sure about campsites. Is the Mount Mitchell Campground a good place to make a reservation? We are backpacking and planning on spending two nights there, starting from the Black Mountain Campground.

Or are there other campsites along the Mount Mitchell trail that you dont need to make reservations for? Thanks for your help.

You can camp along the Black Mountain Crest Trail as long as you're not inside the state park. The state park has a tent-only campground near the summit. There are millions of back country campsites throughout the National Forest around Mount Mitchell.

The tent-only campground near the summit that Bob is talking about is really cool. It may be filled if you go during a busy time, but it has nice bathrooms and is I think the highest "campground" on the East Coast. Have a fun trip!

If your hiking up from the Toe River, don't bother with the campground; too many other less trammeled and quieter.
