Eastern Sierra Conditions - October 2014

by MCGusto » Thu Oct 16, 2014 6:19 am

Hey all,
I haven't been following what's going on with the Sierra weather… How are things looking above 12k feet? Checked the weather for the weekend, and it looks perfect. Might try for a day hike of Lone Pine Peak via Meysan Lakes Trail, if I can squeeze it in.

Thanks in advance,

Gusto

Pretty dry just about everywhere except glaciers and a little residual snow in some north facing chutes. It was pretty windy the last couple of days but that seems to have subsided.

Hi, I just came down from Mount Sill on Monday. The weather was perfect. We camped at 10,060 ft. It was cold at night, just below freezing. There was almost no snow. We did not have to cross a glacier or snow to get to the L-Couloir. There was some snow up there in the shade, but not enough for crampons.

I can vouch for most of that in my neck o' the woods. Warm days, cold nights, with light snow hanging in northern exposures above 11.5K a week after the end–of–September storm (none since). I was camped as high as 11.2K and my water bottle froze 2 out of 4 nights.

"Friday nite - Snow showers. Low around 14. Wind chill values as low as -2. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 16 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible." WOO-HOO! Bring it on!

I'm trying to find some ice this weekend. It looks like Tioga Pass closed so I can't get at North Peak or Mt. Dana. Any other recommendations out there besides the Palisades?

Sonora Pass reopened today. With a holiday weekend coming up and significant snow accumulation unlikely through the following weekend, I'll be surprised if Tioga Pass doesn't reopen Thursday or Friday. I'm less optimistic about Saddlebag Lake Road, but have never passed through that area during a shoulder season scenario like this one.

Boy Scout falls is probably fat enough to climb now. If you want mixed, North Couloir of Lamarck.

I'd go for North Peak if I was you. They will re-open 120 and I saw a photo of that couloir looking good.

Saddlebag is a pretty short walk if not open.

With the warm weather, it seems like hiking options will still be somewhat unlimited for those with time to get out.

Thanks veterans!

Here are a few pictures from November 2nd, 2014 after two storms which dumped a couple feet of snow. The snow on the bottom of the mountain was melting fast though.

How I would love to see some pictures of the east side (presuming the snow has started falling) and White Mountain... Thanking all in advance!
